Jim, good news for the budget – gas is $2 (US) per gallon (3.8L) here!!! Bad news is you’ll be through Ecuador on only three full tanks!!
Wow, that is cheap fuel. Paul, can I ask for a bit of info (when you get time and whilst you’re enjoying Equadors super fast Wi-Fi!) Tyres and SatNav mapping.
I’ll fit new tyres just before we leave for BA. We’re initially heading up to the Iguaza falls then starting south to the bottom. So far I like running the bike on Anakee 3’s which you probably know are a 80/20 road/trail tyre (great on tarmac and pretty good on fire tracks / gravel / dry mud or grass but useless for wet/muddy). So question is, when heading south for TDF at what point do the roads turn to gravel or start to warrant something more knobbly? I could fit more trail orientated tyres from the off – interested in how you’ve found it. (The GS is 19inch front and 17inch rear)
SatNavs – I see from your photos you’ve a Zumo 660 fitted which I what we have. Do you run Garmins own South America mapping on it? I’ve looked at Garmin SA maps (expensive) but also found some free opensource mapping but so far I can only get the opensource maps onto my PC Mapsource software, not actually onto the 660 itself.
I hope the clouds thin out a bit so you get some better views but as you say, once you’re above them it’s great. Is there anything much more spectacular than looking across a range of peaks with the clouds below you!! Ride safe.
Paul, I’m being a fool, having just asked you the tyres/Satnav question I went browsing your website and promptly found that detail under ‘bike’ – doh! Tell you what, let’s just say if there’s any info you think is useful (like how easily or otherwise you found it to buy tyres for your bike, that’d be great.

Unfortunately, Simon, my beautiful woman has got to leave me for a bit and earn some money, so the videos are going to lose all their appeal!!
